Although jealousy is mostly seen in the beginning of the book, it is ultimately important due to the chain effect it is able to cause. When Samantha was at a party and saw her crush named Zee kissing another girl, she responded by kissing a guy named Alex in order to make Zee Jealous. Even though Samantha's intentions were quite innocent only hoping for the outcome of jealousy, a dreadful situation came about instead, which is where the chain reaction of jealousy begins based on consequences. When Sam kisses Alex, Alex begins to heavily breath to the point where his throat begins to close up. Zee sees what is happening to Alex and responds frantically where he ditches the girl he was kissing to find Alex's sister Chloe. Chloe comes in a hurry to see what is happening to her brother which she responds in hysterics saying, "EpiPen...Does anyone have an EpiPen?" due to the fact that she concludes that her brother is having an allergic reactions from his allergy of peanuts. In the end when its all over, Alex does not survive and fingers are pointed at Sam. Sam admits to having a peanut butter sandwich before the party which everyone then concludes that she murdered Alex. This whole scenario would have never occurred if Sam did not let jealousy get the best of her; Jealousy ultimately ended up false accusations towards an innocent girl (Sam) and ultimately a death of a boy (Alex) in a sense.

Samantha's transformation through the novel can really only be seen as a full-loop circle. The only difference is that she comes back around with a realization of her situation where she wants to make a peanut-free organization due to the scare and the allergies that could affect other children around the world; Samantha comes back with the motivation to better herself and the society around her. The beginning even of Alex's death was ultimately a wake-up call for everyone where people's, ultimately Samantha's, responsibility was to look out for each other in a society that could be so dangerous.

Spinning- Cool For August

These will cure my aching head,
Help me see again
These will take away the guilt
Ease my soul again
Leave it in my fears
And I see theres nowhere to run
Feelin these changes, and the need to go alone
And I see theres blood in the sun
Pouring through my window
And the evening light is gone
And I made a pact to myself
That I'm spinning in my pain or my guilt
And I feel the way, I commend
That I'm spinning in my pain all again
Feel this when I lay my head
On a nail filled bed
These will change the way it is
Break me free again
Listen to my prayers
And I feel that its all in the past
Memory of children, and the innocents I aint
And I feel that its oceans away
I'm favoring conscience,
The decree of my strength
I need a pass to myself
That I'm spinning in my pain or my guilt
I feel the weight I create
When I'm spinning in my pain or my guilt
All again...
I made amends to myself
That I'm spinning in my pain or my guilt
I feel the weight I create
When I'm spinning in my pain or my guilt
All again

Analysis
Throughout the novel until the near end, Sam experiences overpowering guilt where she has no one to truly go to. Sam is isolated in world that blames her for a situation that she ended up not causing which makes her pain almost unbearable. Sam guilt was so intense that it isolated her from her friends and family and also ended up making her quit her favorite activity in the entire world, swimming. Even though Sam was known as cute, funny, and an excellent swimmer, she gave all of that up when she was forced with the blame of a crime she did not end up committing.
The verse of the song where it says,
"And I see there's nowhere to run
Feelin' these changes, and the need to go alone"
represents Samantha's feelings where she feels all alone. In a way it is ironic because she began running to take her mind off of things where in the song it says "nowhere to run" where Samantha never really runs anywhere but instead in circles and in the same trail usually.
The song also emphasizes the affect guilt may have on a person where they are "spinning in my pain or my guilt all again..." and seem to be getting make no process, just as Samantha feels until the near end of the novel.

In Janet Gurtler's novel, Who i Kissed Samantha struggles to flourish socially in her high-school community. Samantha is forced to deal with the blame guilt of accidentally killing a boy named Alex who was allergic to peanuts; Samantha ate a peanut butter sandwich and then kissed Alex. Although at the end of the novel when it turns out Samantha did not actually kill Alex but rather Alex suffered from a sever asthma attack, she still tires to better the community by organizing a Peanut-Free campaign. Even though people harshly accused Samantha as a murderer and she was forced to live with overpowering guilt, she managed to break through and benefit the society around her.
Although King Claudius was seen as a protagonist in Shakespeare's Hamlet he can be compared to Samantha where he was forced to deal with temporary guilt. Claudius had to deal with the guilt of killing his brother King Hamlet. Even though Claudius desired for what his brother had and ended up receiving those desires, he in a way regretted the murdering of his beloved sibling where Claudius says, "My words fly up. my thoughts remain below./ Words without thoughts never to heaven go." (III.iii.100-103) When Claudius says this, he is basically saying that he does not want true forgiveness due to the fact that he does not want to lose all that he has gained by killing his brother, King Hamlet; his prayer is ultimately impure. Claudius becomes paranoid and such when Hamlet gets him to basically confess his crime during Hamlet's play, which leads to a stronger guilt of his sins.
Even though Samantha and Claudius play majorly diverse roles in their novel/play, they both suffer with the pressure of guilt and blame. Even though Samantha tries to better the society even when she discovers she was not guilty, she better the society with her Peanut-Free Organization. Claudius does not better his community at all and actually ends up making everything worse where in the end all end up on death beds. Even though characters handle guilt and blame differently, guilt and blame play a major role in a character's transformations and actions, and the theme of the novel/play.
